Upward I look

Ephesians 6:18
Pray in the Spirit at all times with all kinds of prayers, asking for everything you need. To do this you must always be ready and never give up. Always pray for all God’s people.

Okay. Got it. We are told to pray at all times. I know. It's great- a prayer before a test, before a meal, before a trip, for people walking by. Sounds good. Now that we've gotten that taken care of, let's move on.

The other day, chapel was simply amazing. I felt the presence of God swoop in like a hurricane. So many of the students were inspired and completely overwhelmed with God's truth which was being presented. The powerful music and worshipful songs had us all standing, eyes closed, tears streaming, arms lifted, voices raised.

I say that I "felt the presence of God." I suppose that is kind of 'Christian lingo,' meaning that I felt like God was in that room with us, and working very powerfully and visibly. It's true- He was. But I though back to a message that I heard near the beginning of last year, and my perspective has been not necessarily changing, but it's been growing.

I began to imagine, as I was standing in that room so filled with awe and abandon, that we were standing in God's throne room. I imagined a towering throne and, sitting on it, brilliantly bursting with shining white light, surrounded by angels and seraphim covering their faces from the sheer holiness and screaming, "Holy! Holy! Holy is the Lord of Heaven's Armies!" sat God. I tried to picture the infinitive size compared to this minute group of people, all of us worshipping this awesome, powerful, victorious Being before us.

It was then that I realized that we were standing there. We were in God's throne room. We stood before God. The angels around us worshiped too, I am sure. We entered into His presence. We humbled ourselves and came vulnerably to Him. He saw us. He searched us. He renewed us.

So then I look back at that first verse. The first time I read it, I thought, "Okay. I want to apply that verse to my life. I want to 'pray in the Spirit at all times.'" So then I thought even longer about it, and realized. If when I pray and worship, I enter into the presence of God- I enter into His throne room... and if I want to pray "at all times"... then I am going to be striving to live my life in God's throne room. He can already see everything I do, He is always with me, but I am beginning to strive for that constant acknowledgment that I am in His presence.

That means letting go of lots of things. There are so many things that I say to people that I wouldn't dare to think of, if I were physically and visibly standing right before the King of the Universe. I would turn off all electronics and spend all the time I could completely engrossed in my devotions and in His word. I would work hard at everything, and never complain- because standing in front of the very One who sacrificed His own Son for me... It's almost too much to comprehend.

Have you ever thought about how cool it is that when we come before the Throne of Grace, there are many other Christians around the world that are there, too? Some of them are repenting, some are worshiping, some are giving thanks, some are earnestly praying, and some are coming for the very first time! We are in the same room with all these other people of God- it's such an amazing thought! And He is listening equally to each one of us, and giving us His love, His forgiveness, and His revival. We are not alone!

But this is how I want to live my life. This is how I want to make judgment calls. This is how I want my decisions to be made. If I am going to be praying in the Spirit at all times, then I am going to be living my life out completely in front of the Throne of Grace. I want it to be a beautiful dance- one of pure abandon and surrender, and one where I move out of the way to let God step in and make all the decisions, and steer me to any place of the dance floor that He wants. His way is best!

So the next time I'm debating whether or not to click that  article, the next time I'm debating whether or not to say 'hi' to the stranger at the store, the next time I'm tempted to go to sleep without saying a word to my Heavenly Father... I want to remember who I'm living my life before. Is that a life worthy of, "Well done, my Good and Faithful Servant?" I'm going to realize that every person, every obstacle that is put in my path, God is with me and He is watching. And the knowledge and understanding that I am in this Holy throne room should change everything about how I live my life. Christianity is a VERB, people!

Hebrews 4:15-16

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
It's my resolution- one of many. So, from now on, as I am going to be trying to stay in this state of praying in the Spirit, will I see you there as well?

Father...?

Yesterday evening ended exactly the same way all the other regretful evenings have. With perfectly good intentions of spending time with God alone, reading my Bible and praying before going to bed- I somehow... got busy. Again.

It started with checking Facebook. From there, I realized I should probably shower. Things went downhill fast from there. I of course had a sudden biting curiosity concerning the Olympics, so after retreating to my computer again to check the medal count for Canada, I just had to go see what events I could watch on TV. Hey, look! Men's Free Skate and Alpine Skiing Slalom? Count me in!

Of course, by the time I finished all this pointlessness, which included enjoying some tea and chatting with friends and family... I was far too tired for any God-time.

Whose child am I? Really? This is a hard thing to write, but it's a scary realization taken straight from John 8:42 - 44, 47

Jesus told them, "If God were your Father, you would love me because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but He sent me. Why can't you understand what I am saying? It's because you can't even hear m! For you are the children of your Father the devil, and you love to do the evil things He does. Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don't listen because you don't belong to God.

That is freaky. Terrifying, really. There have been many times that I have not listened 'gladly' to the words of God. Yesterday evening was one of those times.

I would love to identify myself as the Child of the loving, compassionate, perfect, holy, almighty God... but am I just kidding myself? In verse 44 Jesus describes the devil as "a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies." That is the description of the father of those who do not belong to God.

I don't belong to the devil. He is not my father. But unfortunately, I could be labeled by the descriptions of those who belong to the devil. If that's the case, there's something wrong! I want to be 100% God's, not 50%, not 75%, not 99.9%. 100% and I don't want to settle for anything less than that. Basically, that means I don't want to settle for the way I've been handling my personal devos for the past long while. I don't want there to be any confusion of whose child I am. I want it to be black and white- as clear as rain.

I know I belong to God- but I also know that I do a pretty bad job of proving it. I run to my friends for advice, I look online for tips and help in life, I listen to music and try to solve my problems on my own. but "Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God." I do belong to God, but here is one place where I fall short constantly.

I have the opportunity for perfect peace and comfort every second of every day, but I still try to seek refuge in things that will not pacify, nor comfort me. It's the irony that so many Christians find themselves trapped in.

Psalm 1 ~
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbanke,
bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

Wow. So maybe that gives a clearer picture of why we aren't experiencing abundant joy. It's because we DO follow the advice of the wicked. We DO join in with mockers. We don't always delight in the law of the Lord, and we don't meditate on it day and night.
However, all those things that we don't do, are the exact things we need to do to have joy, and to prosper. These are the descriptions of the children of God. These should be the descriptions of me. I'm working at that.

. . . . I'm looking for a joyful evening tonight!

The Olympians

Sochi 2014. It's happening. Here we are, along with the rest of the world. All these nations, all these countries, we meet in this one event that somehow connects with everyone, regardless of race. These are the Olympics: raw talent mixed with years of blood, sweat, and tears. This is what athletes dream about. This is what they work all their lives toward. This is where people's climaxes are reached. This is where people's lives are shattered.

This is where the human race determines the best of the best, ignoring all the rest. This is where they ignore all the hours, days, weeks, months, and years that were spent in preparation. No medal = no matter. They're all talented, no doubt, but their faults are highlighted above all else, and they are awfully penalized for every little mistake. Eyes are peeled for slips, much more than for the strengths. The trips, falls, and crashes are replayed over and over, shown to the world nonstop, forgetting the rest of the otherwise-flawless performance. We focus on the bad.

That's a prime example of what happens when we follow the example of the third servant in Matthew 25.

14 ~ Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip.

I have no talents. I have no gifts. I can't do anything . . . God can. He has chosen to given me His talents and His gifts- and He's chosen to give specific gifts and talents to every single human on earth, just like the servants in the parable. Otherwise stupid, incapable, weak creatures, he personalized with gifts of wits, speaking, writing, creativity, singing, dancing... athletic abilities- and much, much more.

I'm sure you know the parable. If not, it's found in Matthew 25:14-30. Basically, the first servant invested His money. This otherwise broke, unemployed servant was entrusted with five bags of silver, the second servant was entrusted with two, and the third with one.

The first and second servant went straight to work, investing the money and working to earn more for when their Master would return. They are the people who understand that their 'talents' and 'abilities' are NOT theirs to keep. They are the people that understand that to loiter around, letting these gifts waste away, is not the right thing to do. These are the people who seize opportunity, take risks, give much, and use their God-given talents to further His kingdom.

In verses 21 and 23, after the Master learns of the wonderful results that the first two servants had with His entrusted money, He gives them equal praise. Even though they were entrusted with different amounts, and the first earned more than the second, the amount was of no matter. They both received the incredible words of the Master: "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!" The only thing that mattered to the Master was that they do their best to use their gifts for His glory.

Then, there are those like the third servant... which was everyone at one point, until we figured out that our gifts were not really ours to keep. He buried his money to keep it safe. He was shy, he was hesitant, he thought his portion was useless and pointless, so he hid it. Sound familiar?

Even people who appear to be using their abilities well, like many renowned artists, singers, performers, and athletes, could be much like the third servant. For a billion gold medals that are not won in God's name are a billion worthless medals. Every accomplishment, every certificate, every practice, every spoken word that is not executed with the intent of glorifying God... is worthless.

The Master calls this man a 'wicked and lazy servant,' but it does not end there.

29 ~ To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

Gifts and talents that go to waste without accomplishing a single thing for God's kingdom are sadly very common. We all have gifts, but I know for myself, many of those are growing dusty, or are being used for meaningless reasons. We need to grasp that these gifts and talents and possessions do NOT belong to us- God is lending them to us, for the purpose of making the most of them!

This is why we are God's servants! This is why Paul is a slave of Christ! This is what it means!

It's been quoted a dozen times on this blog already, and it'll be quoted a dozen times more.

Matthew 6:19-21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
